Second Day of Rotation Two – Continuation of Portraits and Watercolor

This week at City Art Lab, our Roots/History and Transformation groups continued exploring their themes of present day roots and inner/personal transformation. Roots/History looked at the artwork of Frida Kahlo, Kehinde Wiley and Deborah Kass, along with their self-portraits from the previous week,  as references for their project this week. Experimental usage of watercolors were introduced to students, with exciting results!

As for Transformation, the students continued to work on their portraits. As references for how to continue their approach, students recalled historical portraiture from Byzantine and Medieval art, Ancient Egypt, and the Expressionists. As more contemporary examples, they also looked to Kehinde Wiley, as well as Titus Kaphar and Tatyana Fazlalizadeh. They also questioned what links these have to the phenomenon of “selfies.”

Here we see some finished as well as in-process work!
