Join New Museum staff on Tuesday, November 8, 2011, for a professional development session for high school teachers, including a gallery tour with New Museum Associate Curator Gary Carrion-Murayari as well as an interactive workshop. Both will focus on the New Museum’s upcoming exhibition “Carsten Höller: Experience,” on view from October 26, 2011, through January 15, 2012.
This autumn, the New Museum will present the first New York survey exhibition of artist Carsten Höller (b. 1961, Brussels, lives and works in Stockholm). Over the past twenty years, Höller has created a world that is equal parts laboratory and fun house, exploring such themes as safety, childhood, love, happiness, transportation, and the future. Höller left his early career as a scientist in 1994 to devote himself exclusively to art-making, and his work is often reminiscent of research experiments. His pieces are designed to explore the limits of human sensorial perception and logic through carefully controlled participatory experiences. Carsten Höller’s work is, first and foremost, concerned with altering our basic assumptions about what we see, feel, and understand as humans. Over the years, the artist has employed psychotropic drugs, flashing lights, and architectural alterations to overwhelm viewers with visual stimuli and challenge accepted self-perceptions. Professional Development Seminars are led by artists and education professionals to assist teachers in utilizing contemporary art in the classroom. The seminars are based on teachers’ concerns and interests, addressing topics such as program implementation and integration with school curriculum. The New Museum welcomes educators of all disciplines.

1:00–3:00 p.m. – Workshop: Take part in an in-depth workshop focusing on the exhibition “Carsten Höller: Experience” and expanding on the ideas and concepts introduced in the morning session. Participants will explore the dynamics of spectatorship, power, and interactivity implicit in Höller’s work and the relevance of these issues to twenty-first century classroom practice. Teachers will be invited to spend an extended period in the galleries, engaging in experiments, art-making, and discussion, and then continue the conversation in the New Museum’s theater.
Reservations are honored on a first-come, first-served basis. Workshop space is limited.
